Aerea

2001, knitted plastic yarn, 300 x 70 x 70 cm
In front of the MOCA museum, the artist performs inside an aerial orchid floating in a fountain. Her throne, interlaced with petals, extends into long threads, like roots sinking into the ground in search of nourishment.
Just days earlier, she had flown over New York on 9 September, witnessing the city immediately before the 11 September attacks. In response, she decided to create a suspended work: an identity that lives in the air and, like an orchid seeks independence in a world suddenly marked by rupture.
